KIM LORDIER

Northern California artist Kim Lordier feels blessed to live where she does, south of San Francisco with open space preserves on one side and San Francisco Bay on the other. “Our terrain is vast, and we can virtually paint in the field year round,” says Lordier. “What strikes me most is the quality of the lightplay on the landscape, the feeling or mood created with the light.” Lordier is an artist member of the California Art Club, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. “My introduction to landscape painting came about ten years ago when I saw my first exhibit of the Early California Impressionists called Native Grandeur that originated with The Irvine Museum and the Nature Conservancy of California,” she states. “In this exhibit were paintings by Edgar Payne, Granville Redmond, Guy Rose and Franz Bischoff, to name a few. The artwork was a collective melding of the color and paint handling of the French Impressionists, and the strength of composition and tonal qualities of the Barbizon School. I continue to study the works of these artists today.”

What inspired this painting?

Tender Is the Eve was created from a study done on site in the Oakland hills of California. The sun was sinking rapidly, and the Earth’s shadow was climbing up the landscape. The sun was behind cloud cover for most of the day, and for the last hour of daylight, we had an incredible color display. This piece is inspired by the emotion that wells up with the close of the day and thoughts of a new beginning for tomorrow.

Why is American landscape painting important today, in the 21st century?

I strongly believe that the human psyche needs, and in some cases craves, silence from planes, trains and automobiles (computers, too). Open space and protected lands benefit all on the face of this Earth, and recording the pristine land in paint and photography is paramount in protecting our vanishing environs.

What’s your best advice to students on painting landscapes?

Paint the big shapes and stay out of the details. I did not understand the strength and power of simple shapes and strong design until I started studying the paintings that inspire me and working from life. I’m still trying to work on these concepts!

Do you paint en plein air?

For many years I painted animal portraits in the studio from photographs. When I first painted outside, about ten years ago, I found what I was meant to do in life. Painting from life is peaceful, exciting and frustrating.
